You have groups two different people. You have the hypocrites and you have the invalidators. They are not necessarily the same monster.

I agree. The message threatened the Sadducean leadership. What would happen to their tenuous hold on the Temple Service when there was no legitimate claim to the High Priesthood? The Messiah, according to tradition, would be able to straighten the whole mess out. In fact, John Hyrcanus (I think) said he and his descendants would manage the High Priesthood until a prophet would come to tell the Judeans who had proper claim. Imaging the stress between a legitimate High Priest and the Romans who controlled the land, gave the Sadducees their power, and controlled access to the garments of the High Priest!

 

No wonder they tried to find false witnesses to speak against Him.
