If he was going to live, he had to "repent."  And just how sincere was this "repentance" you speak of. 
 
If I remember correctly Jonah 'fessed up' to the sailors and volunteered to be thrown overboard. He could have made them all
suffer along with him or he could have drowned.  In the belly of the fish he came to the realization that "those who are taken in by lying vanities forsake their own mercy" (something some on TT are still ignorant of) and he cried to God for mercy.
 
He was pissed that the enemy listened to his correction. This event was not about Jonah  --  it was about Nineveh.  
God was going to use Jonah NO MATTER WHAT.
 
Like God is hard up and has noone else to replace the errant prophet?
