My best girlfriend’s son (Jewish) is doing his PhD thesis on Protestant art.  So go figure.  The reason why you perceive less “worthwhile art” in the Christian community is because it is being produced by a subculture with much less funding than the worldly venues.  All the more to be applauded for it IMO.  Some might consider the gospel, presented on a low budget with cartoon characters, to be pap.  But it still saves souls, which is a bit better than an Academy Award. When my sons were children they weren’t allowed to go to birthday parties if the entertainment was a movie about witchcraft or anything like that.  They weren’t allowed to bring home godless music, as I considered our home “safe” territory from the onslaughts of worldly evil, no matter how innocuous it seemed on the surface. Today they are mature adults who love the real Jesus, and can actually differentiate between right and wrong (what a concept!)  “Good taste”, IMO, is determined by the Lord and not by the world.    We will be judged on our “good taste” in the end.  Izzy

You are? I better correct that situation ASAP! :-) Seriously, I forgot to mention my sad observation that the proportion of worthwhile art is even smaller in the "Christian" lagoon than in the secular ocean. As a responsible parent I steer my kids away from "Christian" videos, novels, and music, as careful discernment tells me they are nearly all pap. Actually, I don't have to do much steering on that because they quickly found it out for themselves. I also discourage them from limiting their friendships to Christians. They played with Pokemon cards for a while, but got bored with it, and Harry Potter is on their bookshelf. We went to see the first two movies; the boys enjoyed them, but haven't become huge fans. (They are much bigger fans of Lord of the Rings.)

They keep their heads very well and know the difference between reality and metaphor. They have good taste.

Debbie, I’m appreciating your comments this morning.  Being in the world but not of it is sometimes challenging.  How much do we want to partake of it w/o being overtaken by it? My two sons are grown.  My step-children, not here with us often enough, live with their biological mother and stepfather in another state and are being raised in a faith and situation which we do not approve of.  That is painful, but we pour Jesus and His Word into them whenever they are with us, and they are very receptive by God’s grace.  We have a wonderful relationship with them.

The grandchildren, ages 6 and under, are being homeschooled.  They do not have cable TV or worldly media in their home.   They watch Christian videos or G rated secular movies and listen to Christian music only.  Their friends are all church or homeschool related, with parents who are familiar with the family.  They are wonderful, smart children with rich lives in spite of what the naysayers would think.  The 6 year old reads the Bible better than our teenaged public-school taught children.  She is playing piano and taking ballet lessons. (My son taught himself to play piano after graduating from the AF Academy, and he is teaching her.)  I am thankful they will not have to deal with the stresses of government schools, or even private Christian schools, full of demonized children.  My sons hated the stresses of public schools, but their father wouldn’t allow them any other option.  Oral sex on the school bus is the norm now.  Not something I want my sweet grandchildren to be exposed to, among other things.  Izzy

...And (she mused doggedly on) some movies, TV shows, books, etc. out there offer as good a critique of our culture as any delivered by a Christian who set out to do so. If not better.

BTW, who else on TT is actively raising children at this stage of their lives? David, I know. Anybody else? If any of you have mentioned your pre-adult children, I'm sorry I've forgotten!
