I agree, but the content of the message of Mat. 7 concerns hypocrites, those
who try to get the mote out of their brother's eye and do not see the beam
in their own eye. The subject matter is the hypocrite who is judging
another. He instructs the hypocrite to first get the beam out of his own
eye, and then what will he do after he does that? The very thing that he
was prohibited to do in Mat. 7:1.

Yes, it does tie in nicely, because Romans 2:1 also concerns hypocrites. He
says, "FOR THOU THAT JUDGEST DOEST THE SAME THINGS." That is the definition
of a hypocrite.

Romans 2:1
(1) Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest:
for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that
judgest doest the same things.

If it were harshness alone, then Jesus would be condemned for chasing the
money changers out of the Temple, or for delivering his scathing sermon like
that found in Mat. 23. I do agree about an attitude being addressed here,
and perhaps you mean to address that rather than harshness per se.
Jesus IS the Judge. Who else went to the Temple with the same intent? No one.
He assumes that all have a beam. Anytime you judge, you must do so with that reality in mind.
It most definitely is hypocrisy to dive into the judgment of a brother without first taking into account the larger failurres
that must exist in your life. Jesus had no beam -- not a speck. When He asserts that our judgment
of others will be the standard for our personal judgment, He is giving us a warning - not just
passing on information. It is a caution. And that is where the "harshness" angle comes into
play. Be careful -- what
you say will come back on you. ( I have no idea why my machine is double
spacing everything in this reply.)

Yes, and I teach the "Judge not" lesson often to hypocrites. You seem to
forget that street preachers are the most judged individuals on the face of
the earth. We like the "Judge Not" message very much.
The judgment you dish out is the judgment you receive.

Bad translation, John. Sorry you can't see that.
Present Ind middle, David.

1 John 3:5
(5) And ye know that he was manifested TO TAKE AWAY OUR SINS; and IN HIM IS
NO SIN.

2 Corinthians 5:21
(21) For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might
be made the righteousness of God in him.

John wrote:

John 20:22-23
(22) And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them,
Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
(23) Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose
soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
You are not included in this; neither am I.

Acts 8:20-21
(20) But Peter said unto him, Thy money PERISH WITH THEE, because thou hast
thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
(21) Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not
right in the sight of God.
I see the apostles as having a very different relationship with the Christ than anyone else.

Peace be with you.
