Blaine:  Just a thought or two--I taught in two different school districts for 30 years, plus I have subbed in at least two other school districts in Utah--four different districts in all.  I have seen a few violence problems, two or three to be more exact, over the years, some incidents when students lied to incriminate a teacher, or other adult, and a few sex problems, but nothing that would lead me to denounce or condemn students as a group.  Most students are seriously trying to get an education.  The kids who attend Mormon seminary every day as part of their school day--released time, as they call it--are tops!  They get religion 6 days a week, and it shows in their superior conduct.  Any one of these kids could quote many passages from the Bible.  They try to live the commandments better than most.  What is happening in the rest of the USA, I can't speak for.  I read the media, watch TV, etc.  It does seem to be getting bad out there.  Cops are more and more a standard part of the school setting, even in some Utah schools.  Granite district in SLC has their own police force.  Drugs are becoming a major problem.  Gangs are also.  Teen gang members often persecute the Mormon kids.

Did anyone actually think 'this' is only happening in the USA? This is but one reason that I do not believe that 'things are getting worse'. 'Things/People' WERE ALWAYS THIS BAD. Longing for the 'good old days' is simply a sign of getting old. However, I've not been into your country since a trip to California some years back (booksellers convention). Even when visiting home (Windsor, just accross from Detroit), I've no wish to expose myself to the violence therein. Let's just say that I believe the USA is experiencing a downward spiral.

Just in case we think this is only happening in the US, look at this from Scotland:

Teachers reporting violence double as hotline launched

FRANK URQUHART

A PIONEERING telephone hotline that allows teachers to instantly report violent incidents in the classroom, has been inundated with calls since it was set up three weeks ago.

The scheme, being piloted at 20 Aberdeenshire schools, is aimed at encouraging teachers and other staff to record physical assaults and verbal abuse by pupils as soon as they happen, instead of having to find time to fill in a report form.

The authority has already recorded 33 incidents since the system started - double the number recorded over the same period last year.

Most of the calls involved allegations of verbal abuse or disruptive behaviour. But school staff also contacted the hotline to complain of being bitten and kicked by pupils. One incident involved a teacher being struck by a bat.

The bulk of the abuse allegations involved special teaching units for children with behavioural problems.

Education authority officials and teaching union representatives said yesterday the flood of calls and the increase in recorded incidents was exactly what they had anticipated would happen.

They said the new recording system would enable school authorities to take appropriate action, leading ultimately to a reduction in violent incidents.

The telephone hotline is expected to be rolled out across the area later this year and is already being assessed by a number of other Scottish education authorities.

It was set up after a think tank of teachers, janitors and other education staff conducted a detailed examination into how violent incidents were being recorded and managed.

The new system allows school staff to instantly log details of pupil indiscipline by contacting trained staff on an incident hotline, instead of having to report the case in writing.

The think tank found that the old logging system tended to be unwieldy and that most education establishments were only recording major incidents.

Elaine Duffy, who headed the think tank, told The Scotsman yesterday that the upsurge in recorded incidents had come as no surprise and was proof of the success of the new system.

She explained: "This time last year we had 17 logged incidents over the same period. The fact that the number of reported incidents has almost doubled is what we expected would happen because we knew there was under-reporting.

"Because the established procedure was so cumbersome the schools were only registering the most serious incidents.

"We were not finding out about low-level verbal abuse and other so-called minor incidents."

Pat Flanagan, the Aberdeenshire local association secretary of the Educational Institute of Scotland, said: "We always anticipated that the figures would rise, but that is a reflection of more accurate reporting of incidents, rather than an increase in their number."

This is exactly what is going on with the kids today.

Just 2 weeks ago a average looking 13 year old told us all her friends are gay & she sees nothing wrong with it. a 13 year old should not know about such stuff. Of course she knew nothing biblical. BUT she knew that the Bible was False and Evolution was true.

Just finished watching a show on one of the Christian channels on the
dish. This evangelist/ preacher was going to college kids, trying to
show them their need for a savior. It was done with minimal preaching,
mostly one on one with the individual or small group in an interview format.

The absolute ignorance of the average college kid is unbelievable. When
he asked for them to name the ten commandments, no one could name them
all. Very few knew more than three, some knew none, and some did not
even know there were commandments. None of then knew that they were to
love God. When asked how many brands of beer they could name though,
these same kids easily came up with ten.

He would ask them if they had ever lied, ever lusted, ever fornicated,
ever stolen, and every one admitted to doing at least a couple of these
things, some admitted to doing them all. Then the interviewer would
say, " since you are a liar and a thief, and you have done what God
says you must not do, where do you think you will spend eternity?" The
answers were either,"I am going to Heaven because God is too loving to
send me to Hell for little sins," or the answer was " there is no God,
no Hell". No one thought that they would spend eternity in punishment.
If there is a God, He is too nice to punish people.

I am reminded of a statistic put out a few years ago by the Southern
Baptists. It said that of all the kids that were raised with regular
church attendance being part of their life experience, eighty-eight
percent of those kids, when they left home, would also leave the church,
and never return.

Thank God for the street preachers. May their numbers and their wisdom
increase. These kids will never hear Christ preached from a pulpit.
