If you are saying that a person exhibits pride when he equates his personal interpretations and speculations with something that cannot possibly be wrong, then I understand your point. However, if you are saying that this is the only kind of understanding that exists, then you are dreadfully mistaken.
Ever heard of "pulling teeth?" Anyway -- when we present our interpretations as being without
the possibility of being wrong, we speak out of pride. I Cor 8:1-3 is always true for me. And I
limit my comments to what we think as disciples for the sake of this discussion.
Jesus promised us the following: John 16:13-14 (13) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. (14) He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. If your theology denies the operation of the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to us, real truth, truth which cannot be wrong, and if you deny the operation of faith in the life of the believer whereby he can be confident and sure of what is true, then you are wrong. This is what I would call a godless theology as per 2 Timothy 3:7 ("ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth").
John 16 does not apply to us today, David. Jesus was preparing his disciple (those who had
been with Him from the beginning)for the immediate eventuality. I would think this to be obvious !!
To argue otherwise is to place one's interpretations of scripture on the same level
as the written opinions of James and Peter and John. Peace be with you.
