Our conscience can by no means be relied upon
to reveal good and evil. If it could, we would all have identical
consciences, but conscience varies from person to person and from society to
society in space and time. It is a social construct. By it we know only that we
do or do not measure up to some standard--our own or our parents' or whatever
(and that is enough to cause us some distress). But in our conscientious
behaviour we are no nearer the real "mark" than
otherwise.
How do we know we are sinners? It has been revealed
to us by the only One who can reveal it.
