Dave, do the present day apostles in the LDS organization travel and experience the kinds of apostolic signs and wonders that Paul did? DAVEH: I believe it happens, but as Blaine also mentioned.....I do not have personal experience or direct witness of such. I seem to remember you mentioning meeting one of the apostles before. DAVEH: I had an interview with Spencer W Kimble while on my mission in England about 36 years ago. Not only was he an apostle, but eventually became the prophet of the Church prior to his death. The interview occurred right at about noon, and he asked me if I'd mind chatting with him while he ate lunch. I said it would be no problem, and he reached beneath the table and picked up a paper bag, which had a homemade sandwich in it which he then proceeded to eat. I think he had a piece of fruit as well, but I really don't remember for sure. It was a relatively interesting experience for me that probably doesn't happen to many LDS kids. I was bragging about that experience (I've since repented!) to a group of brethren at Church once, and a good friend of mine topped my experience a hundredfold. He was in a neighboring mission (in London) at the same time, and because of his diligence in his work, he was invited out to a steak dinner with SWK shortly after he left our mission. I don't know why I needed to share that with all of TT, as I suspect like you found with Lance, others might mock the special experiences we have.....and, I rather found my (and my friend's) experience with SWK to be a little bit special. Did you witness any kind of special miracles like what we read about in Scriptures? DAVEH: No. And if I had, I'd be very reluctant to share it on TT. Does the Mormon church report your apostles raising the dead or healing the sick regularly? DAVEH: No, the details of such things are rarely discussed, except by word of mouth. Do the sick line up at their meetings hoping for a healing? DAVEH: No, such things are almost always done in private. What are the modern apostolic meetings like in your church? DAVEH: Typically, the General Authorities (which may include leaders other than the apostles) meet in mass meetings once a year or so for each area. The last one I attended was held in the Rose Garden, which is one of the few places locally that can easily accommodate upwards of 20k. Basically, the fly in for a day or so, and have a couple large meetings in the area, and I suspect they have a few smaller ones as well, but I have not been privy to any of them, except for some interesting anecdotal stories that I've heard over the years. We do have two General Conferences each year, as you might know. That allows the gospel to be taught to the LDS folks without the need for so much travel involved. With the ease of modern communications, it is easy for most (American, anyway) LDS folks to see and hear the testimonies of the apostles twice a year. Have you ever watched one of the Conferences on TV? I'm pretty sure you would find them quite different than anything you might experience in the Protestant realm. If anything, you might find them a bit boring, as they do not try to put on a show or turn their messages into a form of entertainment.
