Hi,

Hello,

I'm evaluating some solutions for a in house corporate solution and I
checked tryton which seems to be suitable except for the license.

I'm all green with the fact that the core of a solution should see
contribution back to it and I would readily contribute, but I'm not ok with
being forced to use the GPL license as soon as I "import" a
library/framework.

This is a grey area.

The question is:

Is a piece of code importing some (or all) framework
functionalities a derivative work of said framework?

I guess the answer is 'it depends', a module that adds only a field on
the party model is according to me a derivative work, but a module
that adds the same field and creates a lot of new objects and
processes isn't.

But IANAL and I think this question can not be answered by mere
developers and that you should seek legal advice.

I want to be free to chose the license for my projects and the copyleft
nature of the GPL prevents that. ( see http://copyfree.org/ )

Good for you.

Is there an alternate way for me to develop my own tryton module in a
different license than GPL ?

It boils down to the answer you give to the question above.
If it's an original work than you an use whatever licence you want. It
it is not than you have to comply with the GPLv3.

Note also that since it would be an in house corporate solution the
licence question could be completely irrelevant since it only applies
when distributing the software (but again IANAL).
