versions coexistence should be drastically limited.

The work needed to maintain several versions increases as the number of versions to maintain. If you manage the infrastructure, you can limit the number of supported versions by applying the upgrades to the latest stable version, so you only support the last one. Here the integrator decides which level of support wants to give.
