Then you should be able to use the "vga=xyz" option in your favorite bootloader ;)
For info : vga=788 (800x600) vga=791 (1024x768)

Tom, You'll also need to enable "framebuffer on virtual console" (CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y) option in the kernel.
