Hmmm, I always use a floppy to install my servers. Would be nice to have a
bootable floppy image for 3.0

We'll look into it, but that would be something totally unrelated to the installer as is, but rather a standalone floppy that has a network configuration interface and grabs the initrd over the network, stores it on tempfs, mounts it, and pivot_roots into it, then running /sbin/init.

It is very doable, but is as I said a standalone project, not really
installer-related at all.

If anyone wants this and is proficient in C, they could write a small
static binary thing that fits on a floppy and does that.

I can even set up a mailing list for it, if anyone is interested. The
point is that this utility would be generic and simply set up network
and then download the specified initrd from somewhere.


Well, it's not that important for me, but booting from floppy was easy with some mainboards having only one PATA controller and two PATA hdd's. No space left for CD-rom.

I have to switch to PXE boot, no problem.
