A while ago I posted to the list about my huge problems getting Samba to work. I had a lot of different issues, one of them being a complete breakdown in functionality when setting Samba security level to "user".

This was with TSL 2.2.

A few days ago I managed to crack the problem: It had nothing to do with TSL or Samba - it was Webmin.

When using Webmin to convert Linux users to Samba users, something goes wrong and the user isn't created correct. Instead you get a Samba user that looks right, but where the password is wrong (I suspect that is what happens).

So I dumped Webmin and did it from CLI (smbpasswd -a USERNAME), and VOILA! it worked like a charm.

Morale: 3rd party tools are great - just don't trust them 100%.

The above was done with Webmin version 1180. I haven't tested it with later versions, as it is faster doing it from CLI. Go figure. :o)

Hope someone can benefit from this lesson - I for one was very pleased to find out why my Samba server was acting weird.

Sincerely,
Thomas
