Yes, have noticed the poject.

Only one plug-in I have tested looked promising, Teamlink3, but when the
centralized calendar has 2000+ entries, it goes terribly wrong. I think it's
because Teamlink uses no database back-end, just a central file-store.

I use the Horde framework for several years now, it is the best 
solution, but I
have serveral customers who run applications that synchronize with Outlook, so
webbased is not an option. Customers who don't need Outlook have migrated to
Horde a long time ago.
