At this point it may help to just upgrade the nics. After trying a lot
of them we´re ended up with Intel XT server nics with single
connections. They are even up to 10% faster then the onboard Intel XT´s
of our Dell servers. You may also have a look at the file structure on
your raid, folders with lots of files in it (say around 5000) can really
slow down network access to smb volumes when there are several clients
in this directory just doing browsing or searching. Keep in mind that
when you are sharing an nfs volume with samba you have an aditional
protocol which doesn´t speed up such a connection. Try to connect the
raid to the samba box.
To give you an idea about your network speed better use iperf
(http://dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Iperf). For Server Dell PowerEdge 1600
with Intel XT nic and Client Dell PowerEdge 1600 with Intel MT nic we
have read/write rates of 102/70 MByte sec. If you are in the need for
speed use G5s as client machines: over 110 Mbyte in both directions.
While iperf not only shows you the speed of the connection it also gives
additional informations about the package sizes of the transfered data
which also could give you a clou about your problems.
