this hasn't been specifically mentioned, so I thought I'd just expand on 
my initial post about something being hung:

this sort of thing most frequently (in my experience) happens with 
network mounts..

given /mnt/files is mounted from smb://server/files :
if the network goes down, any attempt at running ls in /mnt will become 
well hung as the server doesn't answer .. this also happens if a mounted 
disk dies..

as I don't use cyrus (because sasl pisses me off) I have no idea what 
the curys-imap spool folder should contain..

and, as an aside .. I can wholeheartedly recommend courier .. never had 
any problems with it (aside from setting up sasl, which is a piece of shit)
