You whould run the original and do some tcpdumping instead and try and locate the problem. Rolling your own has it's cost (let the trolling begin?). Doesn't seem that anybody subscribing to the list has the issues you describe, but you never know. And finding the solution, no matter where the bug lies, is a benefit to the distro and probably the whole community (not only around TSL, but OpenSSH aswell). You never know.
