latest versions does not mean necessarily better. It could happen
that some new bugs are present in new versions and not in previous  
ones...

Regarding proftpd: why you've installed it? You can use sftp  
available when
you launch ssh service; the better way to make a service not  
vulnerable is,
if possible, not installing it! And this is the case.....
