Hello, everyone. Welcome to the Linux newsletter, the voice of the
O'Reilly Network's ONLamp.com and LinuxDevCenter.com sites. If you're
interested in system administration, open source development, or open
source usage, this is your newsletter. Here's a look at this week's new
articles:
Writers and programmers face similar problems when they have to work
together. Consider the case where multiple writers must translate a single
source document undergoing constant revision. What's the solution? Source
control. Chia-liang's Kao's Collaborative Document Editing with svk
explains how the svk version control tool allows distributed editing and
merging. You may not be translating (or even writing), but chances are you
have to work with other people.

One of the best features of the Unix mindset is that it allows
network-transparent work. It's very easy to build a network of thin
clients to simplify your administration. Mikhail Zakharov's Building a BSD
Netboot Server explains how to set up a powerful BSD server to serve
images to multiple clients. We'll publish the second part soon.
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2004/09/09/diskless_server.html
In the anti-spam open source field, few projects have more adoption and
respect than SpamAssassin. Recently, we tracked Alan Schwartz down upon
publication of his SpamAssassin book. Alan's What's New in SpamAssassin
3.0 covers the best and most powerful features in the imminent version of
the software. Roll on SPF support!

Finally, you may recall the O'Reilly/Novell Linux Desktop Migration
Contest from a few months ago. We're proud to present The Best Tips from
the Great Linux Desktop Migration Contest. I hope this will help you in
your migration.

In our weblogs this week, James Elliott asks for open file formats[1], Nat
Torkington complains don't force an OS your top users don't use[2], Steve
Mallett praises Kompose: Expose for KDE[3], brian d foy explains how not
to do public relations[4], Damien Stolars rightly brags Carbot, Inc. in
the New York Times[5], William Grosso decides that he's becoming an open
source person[6], Kevin Bedell reports on understanding the technology
book market[7], and Don Schwarz recommends avoiding checked
exceptions[8].

This week's Open Source Project of the Week is TortoiseCVS, a GUI CVS
client for Windows.
Join us next week for a more realistic look at open source security.
Don't miss it,

*** ONLamp.com and Linux Devcenter Top Five Articles Last Week ***
1. Improving Linux Driver Installation
The availability and quality of hardware support has a huge effect on
Linux adoption. With the Linux revolution fully under way, the
philosophical underpinnings of the kernel's approach to device handling
have come into question. Linus is unlikely to budge. As Jono Bacon
explains, this leaves two new projects to bridge some of the gaps between
philosophical purity and practical support.

2. What's New in SpamAssassin 3.0
In the course of writing SpamAssassin for O'Reilly, author Alan Schwartz
tested beta versions for the upcoming SpamAssassin 3.0.0 in order to cover
any differences in the book. Here, Alan presents an overview of some of SA
3's newest, coolest features. Find out why he thinks mail administrators
should strongly consider upgrading to SA 3 when it's released.

3. Scribus: Open Source Desktop Publishing
Desktop publishing came of age in the '80s, but open source options
concentrated mostly on TeX and LaTeX. For users who want a friendlier
interface, Scribus aims squarely at PageMaker and QuarkXPress. Howard Wen
explores the features of Scribus and talks to its developers.

4. Collaborative Document Editing with svk
If you've ever tried to write a document collaboratively, you know the
pain of tracking multiple edits. Programmers face the same difficulties
with source code, so why not borrow their version control solutions?
Chia-liang Kao demonstrates how to use svk, a distributed version control
system, to manage changes to translations and other collaborative
documents.

5. Building a Unix Server
Building a new server is always a little exciting -- you have the chance
to make a fresh start, with good intentions and everything. But if it
never ends up that nicely, take some tips from Dru Lavigne, who explains
how she sets up Unix servers.
