I'm not familiar with the process for macports, but I don't think it would as easy to automate the update process as pushing a file somewhere, unfortunately. The process involves updating the formula (written in a fairly declarative subset of ruby), and submitting a pull request to the main homebrew repo on github. I've done this a few times, and it's been pretty easy - if releases were happening more frequently, it might conceivably become a bottleneck, but seems OK to me for now.
