I've been embedding git versions by passing them with the compiler
flags, the git version is taken at the location of the Tupfile, so
it works across submodules as well.
GIT_VERSION = `git describe --always`
DEFINES += -DGIT_VERSION=\"$(GIT_VERSION)\"
