You are confusing the build for Turbine with the build for the TDK.
They are not the same thing. I have warned people about trying to
build the TDK themselves as it is not a simple process. The TDK will
definitely use released versions of tools but for a long time catalina
changed and Ant was adding features. I have always built the TDK from
sources. I will continue to do so and use tags for releases.
You can use Turbine entirely on its own with using the TDK, the TDK
is simply a convenience.

Again, you are confusing the Turbine with the TDK. Right now what
is required to build Turbine is included in the repository. That
will probably change in the future but is the case right now.

Turbine's build is self contained. The TDK has a complex build process
because the TDK incorporates many different tools. I will stress again
that building the TDK requires some patience if you are going to try it,
but it's not something I've ever recommended.
It is meant to be a bundle that makes the generation of someone's first
Turbine app relatively simple and to that end I think it serves it's
purpose well.
