This sounds ok. I guess that once you went through this step, the 
settings are saved once for all ?

I think that one main point of Maven is to have updates done 
automagically, and tools to
update project descriptor. Wouldn't your code break this point ?

Actually, I saw that updater work for my projects, and was quite happy 
with it.
