For using the css try this in you template:
$page.setStyleSheet("$content.getURI('/style_IE5.css ')")�
Regarding the $page tool it's a request tool defined in your
TurbineResource.properties file, it is an instance of
org.apache.turbine.util.template.TemplatePageAttributes so check out those
API's for more info ;o)

has anybody a good source of dokumentation for turbine 2.2?
for thinks like how to set and how to place css files? i tried
$page.setStyleSheet("/style_IE5.css") in my Default.vm and placed it in
the webapp root directory, but it isn't found...
has anybody some hints for this things? can css files used with the ui
tool as part of skins?
