This was a message sent to EJBoss. Scott, do you want to address Bud's
concerns in light of OPaL and if it might help him out? Please keep the
discussions on the Turbine list and if they wander into EJB we can
return it to the EJBoss list.

Thanks,
Brett

Subject: object relations and fine-grained objects...

Hello everyone,

[In case I'm asking something unsuited for this list, please tell me
off]

I'm currently designing a system that manages workflow, that will have
tons
of small objects that change rapidly (tasks, resources needed or
produced by
tasks) and will have tons of relations between objects (including
hierarchies over resources and tasks). The system will be an open
source
web application written in Java (and thus I'm interested in EJBoss).

My naive idea was that EJB's entity beans would take care of persistence
of
my objects--but it seems that they are too fine-grained to be handled by
EJB
at all and that object relations will be addressed only in EJB2.0 (my
misunderstanding of Rickard's response to "Critical report on
EnterpriseJavaBeans" at JavaLobby).

Could someone could help me with the following questions:

* will EJB still give me useful services even if entity beans don't fit
my
needs?

* are there O/R tools that work on top of EJB1.0/1.1 (as mentioned by
Rickard) that provide both fine-grained object support and efficient
support
for object relations?

* if so, are there any open source tools of this kind?

I'm grateful for any advice you can give me.

cheers
