There's been a lot of work done in OPaL but unfortunately it's not finished.
That would be awesome if you could contribute to it.

The other method currently used in Turbine is the Peer approach.  Basically
every business object has a Peer that is responsible for handling its
database stuff.  Turbine will work with other persistence mechanisms too.
