There is another option. Recently there was a log package checked into the
Avalon project at java.apache.org. It is slightly faster than log4j and
IMHO more well designed. But I am the author so I may be biased. 

The only negative when compared to log4j is that there are fewer output
targets. In my possession I have a lot more but they are unfortunately
owned by various buisnesses. As I get permission I will include it into
Avalon but until then it only logs to files/stdout.
