Turbine and Torque are coupled in the following ways:

#1. Configuration.
#2. Connection Pool.
#3. Requirement for the turbine.jar

You don't have to use the DBPool in your EJB system, you can open more
connections to the database...that doesn't hurt anything unless your
database is drain bramaged and can't deal with N number of connections to
it.
