I am a student applicant for this year's GSoC and I have submitted a proposal for building a library of ToscaWidgets using jQuery and OpenLayers. My proposal is at http://docs.turbogears.org/GSoC/StudentProposals2008#project-toscawidgets-library-for-openlayers-and-jquery
Further to discussions on these threads http://groups.google.co.in/group/turbogears-trunk/browse_thread/thread/48f4ebf02964681b http://groups.google.co.in/group/turbogears-trunk/browse_thread/thread/ba72a73dbae52398 I would like to open this thread on the issue of selecting the single best or 2/3 best javascript toolkit(s) for TwTools. Apart from OpenLayers which is one of the fastest developing client-side web GIS toolkit, supported by the OSGeo (http://www.osgeo.org/openlayers) I proposed to develop the widgets using jQuery. The main reasons for that are: (a) I felt the core of jQuery is very strong. It supports amazing capabilities using very clean and compact syntax. (b) It offers a rich set of fundamental features for Selection and DOM Manipulation. (c) It is very well documented. I found three published books on jQuery. (d) It allows other tool kits to build on top of it. For example, I heard EtxJS widgets can use jQuery core libraries. This only speaks of the clean api design of jQuery. (e) Given the set of features it offers, it is very light weight. And that matters for a webapp. However, I found less no of readymade widgets available for jQuery. ExtJS seems to have a comprehensive set of well polished widgets which can get anyone readily started. But I also heard that it tends to takeover the layout of the page. These thoughts are a result of my limited research and very little experience in the field of Javascript. So thoughts, ideas, suggestions, flames are welcome.
