Well, OK, I think I finally understood (with a lot of help from the guys at #4suite) what is happening in the parser.
It seems the parser is missing a handler (the ExternalEntityRefHandler) that would load the real XHTML DTD from some place (in the absence of this DTD, expat just uses the default XML DTD that doesn't include the definitions for , etc). I'll try to implement that tomorrow.
If any guy working on Kid would like a little explanation, I could manage to (more or less) give you an idea on this.
