You might consider using Flash for something like this. ActionScript (Flash's version of _javascript_) can open a persistent socket to the server.

Under Mozilla (and maybe Safari) you could also use multipart/x-mixed-replace to push Ajax data down the line, but this isn't supported at all by IE.
