No, it shouldn't be a problem.  My guess is that you were hitting a bad fastCGI process, resulting in the errors you experienced. 

Take a look at the DreamHost instructions again, and look at the "Troubleshooting" section.  Go ahead and pkill the tg_fastcgi.fcgi process until you can't see it listed under the "ps -A" command.  Killing the process until it's gone is not normally recommended, however, it's probably a good idea to start with fresh fastCGI processes in place.

Now, once this is done, fastCGI won't work for about 10-15 minutes (I'm not sure why), so wait a little while before trying to access your site from the web.  After waiting for about 15 minutes, access your site and see what happens. 

Hopefully this will clear things up.  If it doesn't, let me know and we can try something else.
