Which version of py-mysql are you using? I get exactly the same error
with my app when using
Pyton-MySQL 1.2.1 but not when using 1.2.0 from DarwinPorts

I had meant to report this as a bug, but I'm not sure if it's a bug
in TG or py-mysql.

After some more googeling, it appears you're right:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00741.html confirms it's a 1.2.1 thing.

However, even debian stable sports 1.2.1, getting 1.2.0 doesn't sound exactly failproof...
