Hi, this is my first mail on this list after reading for some time. But since I've seen no introductory post since then I just omit that for the sake of some on-topic stuff ;)

But three of my recommendations are multi-platform, so it might be of some worth: - Mac only: TextMate, the editor which Kevin uses in his TG movies. Fast, reliable, even if tag completion (CMD-=) seems not to work with my installation ;) - Eclipse with PyDev like Fred recommended in another mail. EasyEclipse (http://www.easyeclipse.org) is really a comfortable way to get up and running fast. I used the PHP version for some time now in PHP development. (Yes I know, I came from python, jumped over to PHP and am now back with python ;) - ActiveState Komodo (http://www.activestate.com/Products/Komodo/) is basically a commercial XUL application (one of the largest non-browser XUL applications around I think). Once again I used it mainly for PHP development but the python features are even fancier than those for PHP. - Xored TrueStudio (http://www.xored.com/trustudio) is an eclipse based commercial distribution supporting PHP and Python. On my powerbook the eclipse based IDEs (because of beeing java) and Komodo (because of beeing a XUL app) run fairly slow (1.3GHz 17" PB, 1GB Ram) ... at least for my typing speed ;) Windows based editors I like (when working on a customers computer) are PSPad (http://www.pspad.com) and TextPad (http://www.textpad.com).
