Alas, the "Jonathan click fix" wasn't really the fix. What happened was, when I was testing mod_rewrite when it wasn't working I was at work, and later when it was working I was at home. Turned out the firewall where I work is blocking ports by default and it was blocking the port I redirected to. The TurboGearsOnDreamHost wiki did warn about this, but I stepped in it anyway.
Jonathan is taking a look to see if there's a problem with the current version of Identity and fcgi. If FCGI ends up working the blocked port problem should become a non-issue (for me, at least).
