"Refactoring" is great. Highly recommended. GoF is still relevant
though it's not that great an introduction to design patterns; more a
reference book. Some of the sample code is C++ and some is
Smalltalk. For an introduction to design patterns, "Head First Design
Patterns" is actually pretty decent if the general style of the Head
First books doesn't drive you nuts. Its sample code is all Java.
