Thanks to all the helpful responses. I guess my problems are down to my own ignorance of the windows platform rather than any problem with python/turbogears.
I have developed on IBM midrange, (system38/as400/i5), for the last 20 years where life is much simpler. i.e. DB is part of the OS and binaries are fully portable across all machines no matter what the architecture. Even in the early 90's when the platform moved from CISC to RISC no recompilation was necessary. Anyway armed with all the useful advise and after a good nights sleep I'll give TG another go today.
