Yes indeed you can install whatever you want, and if you take a look at the api (which IMO is one of their best features) you could automate almost all deployments. It's awesome. And as others have pointed out their customer support is great. I do have to agree that the slice option isn't bad, as having to install things on your HOME is a bit complicated. I'll love it if webfaction will offer that in the future.
