I just want to point out that other minor things (identity for
example) are things I want to work on porting. For example we know
that the current "query api" for "identity" isn't quite there and I
want to make it more TG1ish for TG2. Any other
improvements/suggestions for the minor stuff are also welcome.

yea totally adding kid should be a really simply thing. If you are
interested please talk to me as I got some experience with that code
and can even send you a "patch" with a "insert your render call here"
for you to finish. For SO it's another story, and I'll love to see
that as tgext.sqlobject or something.
