Just had a look and found you're right. TW falls back to its built-in engine if you use an inline template and neither available_engines nor engine_name is set. The FormField widget has available_engines set to genshi and mako, so if you inherit from that, it will work. But if you inherit from a bare Widget, you need to set engine_name or give a file name as template like "genshi:mytemplate.html".

I don't think we can do anything about that in TG itself, it's a quirk of ToscaWidgets.
