... when using the 2.1.x stable pre-release build (https://turbovnc.org/DeveloperInfo/PreReleases) on the client machine. This is a stopgap measure until I can release 2.2 beta later this month. Please test the pre-release and let me know what is still broken.
Quite a lot of things were deprecated or obsoleted in Java 9. For most of them, I was able to find a suitable replacement using current APIs. For some (including the OS X full-screen feature), there are no suitable replacements yet, so the TurboVNC Viewer must continue to use the deprecated APIs for the time being. As you probably know by now, Java 9 itself is being obsoleted this month in favor of Java 10, which will be obsoleted this Fall in favor of the Java 11 long-term release. The beta of TurboVNC 2.2 will be released this month, and I will withhold the final 2.2 release until I can test it against Java 11. The other news is that, unfortunately, Oracle has deprecated Java Web Start, which throws a huge monkey wrench into the deployment strategy for many TurboVNC sites. They are moving Java more in the direction of a framework for standalone applications, which IMNSHO seems like the wrong direction. If your company/organization is a paid Oracle customer and is using Java Web Start, then please express your opinion to Oracle regarding their decision to kill JWS. They've been preaching the gospel of JWS for years and actively promoting it as the migration path for applets, so it makes no sense to deprecate it at exactly the same time that applet functionality is deprecated. In the U.S., we refer to that as a "Slinky dog"-- as soon as the tail catches up to the head, the head bounces forward and out of reach again.
