It looks like you may be encountering this issue:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=882122
If the issue only exists within TurboVNC, then I will investigate it as
a TurboVNC bug. If it is reproducible outside of TurboVNC, then it's
someone else's problem.

Hi,
I've got a new workstation with Ubuntu 18.04. I installed TurboVNC
2.2.6 there. The preinstalled Thunderbird 68 didn't have a calendar
tab, because in that tb version it still was the lightning add-on,
which isn't available anymore. In Thunderbird 78 the calendar tab is
fully integrated. So lightning isn't needed anymore. That's the
reason, why it isn't available anymore. So I uninstalled tb 68 and
installed tb78. But this version cannot be startet. When I try to
start it from command line, I get these errors:
~$ thunderbird
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Verbindung ist gescheitert: Connection refused
Error: cannot open display: :1
"Verbindung ist gescheitert" means "Connection has failed" in english.
Display ":1" is the TurboVNC session I'm connected to at this point.
So why does the TurboVNC server refuse the connection of Thunderbird
here? And what does "No protocol specified" mean here?
