What about this (he suggests without looking in tuxpaint code to see how feasable it is ;-) ...
Make it so when someone holds down some meta key (like alt or ctrl or whatever) they get a "Save As" dialog, and normal otherwise... This way, the students old (or just mature) enough to use such a feature have a way to do so that's not too tough, and those too young for a feature can just still function as is.
