You might try keeping a tarball of a KDE-less, GNOME-less chroot around, and 
do installs into that chroot as part of your testing in preparation for a 
release.

Without reference to specific error messages, I cannot begin to guess. :)

It makes sense to order the build targets with "core" stuff first and 
"extra" stuff last, anyway.
