I tested like this:
 - if no Chinese fonts are installed you get little squares,
 - if only the old (zh.ttf) font is installed you get some blanks and some of 
   the correct characters (although in a slightly different style),
 - if the new (zh_tw.ttf) font is installed it looks good.

Popping up a dialog complaining that a required font was missing, would be 
nice, but using what language/font? :-)
