Well, took an insane long time to get where I am now. Did fiddle with the PNG libraries, installed new RPM's, compiled new PNG versions, etc. And all that did was introduce other problems. By now I've upgraded my box to SuSE 9.1 and the included TuxPaint runs like a charm.
