It's the libSDL_ttf version that should matter.
A few months ago, a fixed version was released.

The problem is that strongly italic stuff can cause a
buffer overflow. Larger sizes will magnify the effect.

A malloc debugger, such as Electric Fence (gcc -lefence ...),
should ensure that you see the problem.
