Keep in mind that the current season must be divided into segments
with Tina Fey's involvement and those without. The Fey segments of SNL
this year have been first rate. The Non-Fey segments have been between
second and third rate. I thought tonight's show was somewhat below
average for the non-Fey segments this year.

I really feel bad for Armisen. His Obama has always been mediocre, but
now that he has to put it up against Fey's Palin, its mediocrity is
underlined in bold capitals.

They did not have a lot to work with in this debate, but I think they
should have been able to come up with something better than this. They
caved into their fear of seeming biased, and gave gutless
characterization of both candidates, and settled for teasing Brokaw. I
would have liked to see them turn their very funny "press in the tank
for Obama" on its head with Brokaw's cozy relationship with McCain, or
focus on McCain's recent nastiness, but I would have settled for them
giving a sharper knife to Obama (maybe give McCain some variation on
H.W. Bush's "I can't believe I'm losing to this guy"). This kind of
pablum is a waste of time, and what earned SNL its recent reputation
for being a light-weight when it comes to political humor. I would
point out that what SNL needs is a double-dose of Tina Fey, but that
might give the impression that I am totally gay for her...

I would conclude that this whole Thursday Night SNL is a horrible
idea, but it looks like they have a rerun this saturday night, so I
guess it was worth a try to do something topical with the debate. If
they ever do a Thursday show in front of a live saturday night show,
they better get more serious about being funny.
