"Day to Day" is gone as of Mar. 20, as NPR is laying off employees at
its relatively-new West Coast studios (the first layoffs in 25 years
for NPR). The African-American newsmag "News and Notes," which also
originated from Culver City, is also going off the same day. Both
shows never got the underwriting or station lineup necessary to stay
on ("D2D" was on a secondary station in New York and is currently not
on the air at all there and was never on in Chicago). "D2D" was also
seemingly hated by the over-60 public radio hardcore for being too
slick and "fluffy" (an attack also made on Minnesota Public Radio's
"Weekend America," which is leaving the air on Jan. 31). "News and
Notes" had the problem of replacing Tavis Smiley after he left NPR
attacking the network right and left (along with his nightly PBS show,
he now has a weekly series for Public Radio International).
