The Smithsonian Metro station will be closed, guaranteed. It almost always is for any big gatherings on the Mall.
All the Metro Inauguration goodness can be found here: http://wmata.com/getting_around/metro_events/inauguration.cfm Trains will run on rush hour frequency all day, buses on Saturday schedule. That essentially shifts some of the burden to the trains. But if the cracked rails from today's fiasco persist, it will be a clusterf... of notable proportions. This is considered normal. We don't fret about the fashion implications of this, because we tend to be more practical, dontcha know. Believe that cold and wet feet are the most miserable thing that could possibly happen during this trip. Do what you can to avoid this possibility. Melissa's suggestion to ride the train in the opposite direction for a stop or two then go the right direction is a good one to keep in mind. Though my time living there was over 10 years ago, I seem to recall that there weren't tons of Metro stops--they are a bit spread out from one another. This is likely to lead to congestion. A good familiarity with the Metro map should help you; if you haven't already, I'd definitely check to see if any Metro stations will be closed or limited service due to security reasons. It also may be smarter to walk a bit out of town along the line you want to take, even in the opposite direction you want to go, in order to score a seat/standing space more easily. Best of luck and enjoy your trip! --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Like TV only smarter.
